COMMIT! is an interactive performance in which a performer falls repeatedly, throwing herself on the ground trying to execute the most “committed” fall that she possibly can.

During the show, she attempts to measure “commitment” through audience feedback, motion capture, and biomechanical sensing. The performance juxtaposes the performer’s unrelenting falling, real-time audience feedback on her “commitment,” and projected visuals of the data she collects during the show. Together, these elements reveal the expectations raised and enforced by surveillance technologies and gamified interaction systems, and confront viewers with the physical and emotional toll of trying to conform.

This project was created by Kate Ladenheim in collaboration with myself and Timothy Ross Kelly. The project received support from the Media Design Practices Postgraduate Fellowship at ArtCenter College of Design, the Barnard Movement Lab, the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance, and the MAXmachina Lab grant.
